On September 18, 1948, President Harry S. Truman spoke before a crowd of between 75,000 and 100,000 people outside of Dexter, Iowa. Dexter was the site of the 1948 National Plowing Match. Truman was invited to speak at the event, and he made it a "whistle stop" on his railroad campaign across the United States.
